By HOKMeta · Published 2026-01-15 · Updated 2026-07-27

Zhang Fei Hero Identity

Role: Tank / Roaming Support | Strength: A (Viable) | Difficulty: Easy | Win Rate: 49.0%

Core Passive: Dark Potential
Human Form: Basic Attack and skill hits grant Madness.
Ferali Form: Using the skill reduces the Movement Speed of enemies within range.

Signature Ultimate: Unbridled Outburst
Roars and transforms. After a short period of invincibility and immunity to crowd control, gains a shield.
The roar creates a wind that damages, knocks back, and stuns enemies.
Gains Movement Speed while in the wind zone.

TL;DR Zhang Fei: A roaming support. Vision and tempo are your real value. Help mid secure lane priority, then shadow your jungler or peel for your marksman. If the enemy jungler can't gank anyone, you're doing your job.

Zhang Fei Skills & Leveling

Skill 1: Forbidden Domain
Deals damage to enemies within range.
Knocks back enemy heroes.

Skill 2: Leaping Savior
Leaps to the target location, granting shields to nearby teammates.
Gains Madness for each shield granted.

Ultimate: Unbridled Outburst
Roars and transforms. After a short period of invincibility and immunity to crowd control, gains a shield.
The roar creates a wind that damages, knocks back, and stuns enemies.
Gains Movement Speed while in the wind zone.

Skill Priority: Skill 2 → Skill 1 → Unbridled Outburst (max Skill 2 first)
Max primary utility/damage skill first, then Forbidden Domain, and Unbridled Outburst on cooldown.

Practical Tips:
• Lane phase goal: survive and farm. You don't need solo kills to win. If the enemy jungler is MIA, play safe.
• Before engaging a teamfight, check if your team can follow up. Diving in alone = feeding, no matter how tanky you are.
• Build adaptively. Enemy has heavy magic damage → magic resist. Heavy physical → armor. One defensive item choice wins or loses teamfights.

Zhang Fei Build & Itemization

Current recommended build for Zhang Fei:

Slot 1: Overlord's Platemail (HP +1,800, PDEF +160, MDEF +80
Extra HP)

Slot 2: Glacial Buckler (CDR +20%, HP +600, PDEF +240
Group damage & slow)

Slot 3: Dawnlight (PDEF +210, HP +900, CDR +10%
Shields on dealing damage)

Slot 4: Spikemail (PATK +45, PDEF +300, HP +700
Reflects damage)

Slot 5: Eye of the Phoenix (MDEF +180, PDEF +90, HP +1,350
Boosts HP Regen)

Slot 6: Succubus Cloak (MDEF +300, HP +1,100
Negates magical damage)

Build Logic:
• Start with a defensive item for lane trading. Second item should add HP or dual resists for teamfight survivability.
• Adjust based on enemy damage types — don't autopilot the same build every game.
• If you get an early lead, slotting one semi-damage item (e.g. Shadow Ripper) accelerates your snowball.

Zhang Fei Arcana & Summoner Spells

Recommended Arcana: Lvl 5: Fate, Lvl 5: Harmony, Lvl 5: Void

Summoner Spell: Heal

Flash enables aggressive engages. Execute can finish off fed carries after your initial combo. Choose based on draft.

Zhang Fei Combos

Standard Combos:
Standard trade (Roaming skirmish or objective fight)
Forbidden Domain → Leaping Savior → Unbridled Outburst → weave basic attacks

Roaming & Vision Control

Early Game Tempo:
• Help mid clear the first wave to secure lane priority, then check the minimap. Knowing where the enemy jungler started is your first major contribution.
• Don't camp bot lane the entire laning phase. If your marksman is safe 1v1, shadow your jungler for 2v1 invades and ganks.
• The enemy support's position dictates your response. If they're bot, you need to be bot too. If they're roaming, you roam.

Roaming Windows:
• Roam after helping your laner crash the wave into the enemy tower. A crashed wave means your laner can farm safely while you're gone.
• Pre-4 minute and pre-8 minute: start positioning for Tyrant/Overlord vision control.

Vision Control:
• Always stand between your carry and the fog of war. You face-checking a bush and dying is better than your carry face-checking and dying.
• Key brush positions: both river brushes in mid, the dragon pit area, and enemy buff brushes. Control these and the enemy team is playing blind.
• When behind, use skills to check bushes. Don't walk into fog you can't see — dying for vision in a losing game just accelerates the loss.

Teamfight Strategy & Positioning

Engage Responsibilities:
• You're usually the primary engage. Before going in, check: 1) teammates are in range to follow 2) enemy key cooldowns are down 3) you have your ultimate.
• Don't dive as soon as you see an enemy. Wait for the carry to misposition — one step too far forward is your engage window.
• After engaging, watch for the enemy assassin. Turning around to CC them when they dive your backline is often more valuable than chasing the enemy carry.

Peel vs Dive Decision:
• Your marksman is fed → stay back and peel. Stand between them and the enemy assassin.
• Your assassin/mage is fed → engage hard, eat cooldowns, let your carries free-fire.
• Whichever side has the gold lead is the side you play around. There's no one-size-fits-all — adapt to the game state.

Zhang Fei Matchups

Zhang Fei struggles against: Diaochan, Wukong, Musashi
When facing these champions:
• Play passive in lane. Surviving > trading.
• Call your jungler for help — don't try to 1v1 a counter matchup.
• Adjust build toward defense. Staying alive is more valuable than an extra damage item.

Zhang Fei counters: Arli, Consort Yu, Marco Polo
Against these champions:
• Play aggressive. Deny them farm and force them out of lane.
• Use your matchup advantage to create a lead, then roam and spread it.
• In draft, Zhang Fei is a strong counter-pick if the enemy locks one of these early.

Meta Performance & Ranked Tips

Current Meta Position: A (Viable), 49.0% WR

Zhang Fei is a solid, consistent pick. Not the best in class, but mastery beats meta.

Climbing Advice:
• One-tricking Zhang Fei is better than constantly switching to "meta" picks you're less comfortable on.
• Be willing to flex off Zhang Fei if the enemy drafts hard counters.
