Dian Wei Guide — Best Build, Combos & Playstyle

Core Passive: Mounting Rage
All skills can cleanse crowd controls. Each successful cleanse boosts his Physical Attack and Attack Range, for up to 6 stacks.

Signature Ultimate: Leap of Fury
Leaps toward the target enemy, dealing damage and slowing them. Enhances himself, dealing extra damage to enemies while enhanced.

TL;DR Dian Wei: A tempo jungler. Objectives > kills. Hit level 4, gank, take Tyrant, invade. Always be doing something — a jungler standing still is losing the game.

Skill 1: Holding On to Sanity
Gains a Movement Speed bonus and enhances the next Basic Attack to deal extra damage.

Skill 2: Outburst
Deals damage to enemies within range and slows them. His Attack Speed and Lifesteal are enhanced when striking an enemy. If he misses, he gains only half of the Attack Speed, Lifesteal, and extra Health recovery effects.

Ultimate: Leap of Fury
Leaps toward the target enemy, dealing damage and slowing them. Enhances himself, dealing extra damage to enemies while enhanced.

Skill Priority: Skill 2 → Skill 1 → Leap of Fury (max Skill 2 first)
Outburst provides mobility or stick—max first. Holding on to Sanity second for damage. Leap of Fury on every level.

Practical Tips:
• Lane phase goal: survive and farm. You don't need solo kills to win. If the enemy jungler is MIA, play safe.
• Before engaging a teamfight, check if your team can follow up. Diving in alone = feeding, no matter how tanky you are.
• Build adaptively. Enemy has heavy magic damage → magic resist. Heavy physical → armor. One defensive item choice wins or loses teamfights.

Current recommended build for Dian Wei:

Slot 1: Boots of Fortitude (PDEF +100, MDEF +50, MSPD +50
Reduces physical damage)

Slot 2: Spikemail (PATK +45, PDEF +300, HP +700
Reflects damage)

Slot 3: Master Sword (PATK +55, Crit Rate +20%, HP +600
Enhances BAs)

Slot 4: Pure Sky (PATK +80, PDEF +150, CDR +10%
Temp. damage reduction)

Slot 5: Succubus Cloak (MDEF +300, HP +1,100
Negates magical damage)

Slot 6: Destiny (PATK +75, ASPD +15%, HP +500
Negates fatal damage)

Build Logic:
• Start with a defensive item for lane trading. Second item should add HP or dual resists for teamfight survivability.
• Adjust based on enemy damage types — don't autopilot the same build every game.
• If you get an early lead, slotting one semi-damage item (e.g. Shadow Ripper) accelerates your snowball.

Recommended Arcana: Lvl 5: Calamity, Lvl 5: Stealth, Lvl 5: Eagle Eye

Summoner Spell: Smite

Smite is mandatory for junglers. Upgrade path: slowing smite vs mobile enemies, damage smite for burst.

Standard Combos:
• Standard trade (Jungling skirmish or objective fight)
Holding on to Sanity → Outburst → Leap of Fury → weave basic attacks

• All-in (Gank or backline dive with team CC)
Leap of Fury after full rotation when Flash is down

Opening Clear:
• Start on the side where you can gank the most vulnerable lane first. Blue buff for mana-hungry champs, red buff for early aggression.
• Full clear to level 4 before ganking. Don't waste time on half-committed ganks pre-6 — the risk/reward ratio is terrible.

Level 4 Powerspike:
• Your first gank target should be the lane with the most CC setup. A lane with hard CC = guaranteed kill or summoner spell burned.
• Successful gank → ping your team to take Tyrant immediately. Getting a kill without an objective is a wasted lead.
• Failed gank → go back to farming. Don't sit in a bush for 30 seconds hoping — that's how you fall 2 levels behind.

Mid-Game Macro:
• 30 seconds before Tyrant/Overlord spawns, start pathing toward that side of the map and secure vision.
• If the enemy jungler shows on the opposite side of the map, immediately invade their jungle or take the objective on your side. Information asymmetry is a jungler's biggest weapon.
• Track enemy buff timers. Stealing a buff puts the enemy jungler behind for 30+ seconds.

Late Game Decisions:
• Don't engage first unless your hero is specifically designed for it. Let your tank find the opening.
• Tempest Dragon > everything. At full build, whoever secures Tempest wins the game. Be alive and have Smite ready.

Engage Responsibilities:
• You're usually the primary engage. Before going in, check: 1) teammates are in range to follow 2) enemy key cooldowns are down 3) you have your ultimate.
• Don't dive as soon as you see an enemy. Wait for the carry to misposition — one step too far forward is your engage window.
• After engaging, watch for the enemy assassin. Turning around to CC them when they dive your backline is often more valuable than chasing the enemy carry.

Peel vs Dive Decision:
• Your marksman is fed → stay back and peel. Stand between them and the enemy assassin.
• Your assassin/mage is fed → engage hard, eat cooldowns, let your carries free-fire.
• Whichever side has the gold lead is the side you play around. There's no one-size-fits-all — adapt to the game state.

Dian Wei struggles against: Sun Bin, Diaochan
When facing these champions:
• Play passive in lane. Surviving > trading.
• Call your jungler for help — don't try to 1v1 a counter matchup.
• Adjust build toward defense. Staying alive is more valuable than an extra damage item.

Dian Wei counters: Marco Polo, Musashi
Against these champions:
• Play aggressive. Deny them farm and force them out of lane.
• Use your matchup advantage to create a lead, then roam and spread it.
• In draft, Dian Wei is a strong counter-pick if the enemy locks one of these early.

Current Meta Position: A (Viable), 51.9% WR

Dian Wei is a solid, consistent pick. Not the best in class, but mastery beats meta.

Climbing Advice:
• One-tricking Dian Wei is better than constantly switching to "meta" picks you're less comfortable on.
• Be willing to flex off Dian Wei if the enemy drafts hard counters.
